To ensure that you enjoy DIY for as long as possible, there are a few things you should note when purchasing a tool.
To ensure that you enjoy DIY for as long as possible, there are a few things you should note when purchasing a tool.
Safety: Pay attention to test seals when purchasing tools. The most well-known German symbol is "GS" and stands for "Tested Safety". "CE" confirms that the tool meets the EC safety directives. You can also use test seals such as the TÜV mark (German Association for Technical Inspection) or the VDE mark (German Association for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) as an indication of safety.
The handle: A good handle is either made of smooth, coated wood, non-slip metal or it has a plastic coating. Ergonomically shaped handles made of two-component or multi-component plastic are ideal. Consumer watchdog groups advise against cheap tools because carcinogenic substances have been found in the handles.
The material: A decisive aspect of the quality of spanners, screwdrivers or pliers is the hardness of the metal used. High-quality mechanical hand tools are manufactured from hardened steel. Pay attention to tools labelled "HSS".
The test: Before purchasing tools, test whether they are easy to operate and whether the individual parts are fitted securely. A hammer head, for example, must under no circumstances be loose-fitting; when buying a new screwdriver, it is best to choose one with a hardened tip or a tip coated with diamond dust.
