Ideally it should be impossible to tell where damaged wooden surfaces have been repaired. Use a repair wax stick with the lightest wood tone and a tube of artist's paint that corresponds to the darkest tone of the grain.
First of all, scratch out the damaged spot (or extract the contents using the fine nozzle of a vacuum cleaner) and then clean it completely with mineral turpentine.
It is advisable to apply shellac or wood wax in the appropriate colour tone to deep scratches. The substance is melted using the flame of a lighter and pressed into the recess using a scraper. Polish the damaged spot once it has dried. In most cases it is then invisible.
You may have to trace the grain a little. To do this, dip the paintbrush into the paint and then wipe it off again until the bristles are nearly dry. Now paint over the wood until a uniform grain is formed.
To ensure that the repair keeps for a long time, you should now apply diluted sealing varnish using a fine paintbrush.
Tip from an expert: When dealing with slight damage over large areas (dull surface, small scratches), it is advisable to begin with the most gentle repair method. This means that you only have to apply wax polish, turpentine oil or varnish and then rub it until shiny. Touch-up pens are also offered in all conventional wood colours at DIY stores.
